Someone’s sense of style can be very versatile, ranging from a Stevie Nicks inspired fit with bell-bottoms and huge blowouts, to a more 90s punk look with studded leather jackets and tall platform boots. Many of us are still finding what aesthetic speaks to us on our style journeys, but TikTok continues to define and give ode to current runway trends by introducing more casual, edgy styles.
TikTok has influenced Gen-Z’s fashion trends as the summer forecast for 2021 calls for bright patterns, monochrome fits and street style aesthetics. The looks are perfectly timed for this year when we’ve been quarantining and our daily lives (and aesthetics) have changed.

Tell Me You’re A Fashion Girl Without Telling Me You’re A Fashion Girl: Graphic Tights

Word of advice: Ditch the black tights. The FYP (For You Page) is flooded with the latest rave in fashion: swirling electric blue tights created by Maison Soksi. Maison Soski is the Spanish-American brand that rose to popularity for its neon leg wear that is designed with bold graphics and zebra stripes. It’s like wearing a costume!
Retro Rocks: Abstract Hair Clips

We’re living in the age of showing off trendy accessories. TikTok influencers love to spotlight 90s claw clips, scrunchies, and clips. These are perfect for quick twist-ups and half-downs (so you can do you!) As long as its quirky-cool accessories keep being designed for us, we’ll keep being obsessed with them.

For some more fit-spiration, try going out in a monochrome green. The timeless color is beyond refreshing to see as so many amazing designers have sprung up during quarantine for creating monochrome sets that are sustainable and equally as fashionable.

Literally waist snatched! Right now, every major influencer is spotted wearing a corset on the app and pairing it with patterned jeans. I can definitely see this being inspired by the latest runway trends. My favorite corsets are from Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier with their sleek, velvet fabrics. Once we are able to start going out more, we’re going to see a lot more experimental fashion appear on the street.

If you’ve been living under a rock this past year, Y2K baguette bags have become favored on TikTok and are extremely easy to style. TikTok’s role in reviving late 90s and Y2K fashion is undeniable, and currently coveted by vintage lovers on the app.
Knitwear

If you’ve embraced your crafty side during quarantine, you’re not alone. Sustainable and eco-friendly fashion has been embraced by fashion TikTok, especially from brands such as House of Sunny. Hand-knit cardigans fit perfectly with the app’s trend in cottagecore and DIY aesthetics. Trends may come and go, but it looks like knitwear is officially here for good. This is also a great opportunity to go through the tags #DesignersOfTikTok #SmallFashionDesigners to support small and know where your dollar goes. Gen-Z has been more aware and resourceful buying second-hand and going thrifting. That’s why I personally like shopping small and vintage to support resourceful designers.

Geometric rings have made a major comeback this spring and were hailed by Refinery29 as “the throwback accessory of the season.” Covered in gemstones, the acrylic rings have childlike features and come in oval and rectangular shapes. According to Refinery29, #ResinRings has over 5.6 million views and #ClayRings has over 14.2 million views on TikTok as of February. Celebrities like Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa have been spotted sporting the nostalgic jewelry. The latest hype on TikTok has provided an opportunity for DIY action for creatives. The kitschy designs are accessible and sustainable!
The trailblazing fashion creatives on TikTok continue to set and define the season’s trends while keeping up with contemporary runaway movements. Authenticity plays a key factor on the social media app, so it’s been undeniable that the app impacted a revival in vintage fashion from fur-trimmed coats to low-rise Y2K jeans. After a year of collective style exploration under quarantine, “FashionTok” gravitated towards maximalist fashion, paying closer attention to contrasting graphics and adding volume to their styles fit for any vintage lover.
