At a time when our passions are more important to our well-being than ever before, I spoke to Evie; aspiring musician and one half of jewellery brand Jules & Eve, to get an insight into the passions in her life.
A lot of Evie’s time is consumed by music, having been singing all her life and more recently learning guitar. ‘I have loved singing since I can remember. I was forever making songs up after hearing interesting words or phrases from conversations around me.’ After experiencing a period in her teens of lacking confidence when it came to performing, she has since worked hard to overcome this and has now realised music is her ‘true passion’. Last year, Evie began teaching herself how to play guitar, thus opening a new world of songwriting for her creativity to explore.
Growing up in a household full of music sparked a lot of inspiration for Evie’s interest in music. ‘My dad played me Oasis, The Doors, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones – all the classics. My mum is the biggest fan of Kasabian. As a result, my music library became immense.’ Evie cites band Wolf Alice as one of the biggest inspirations of all after hearing ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ in 2014. ‘That was a mad turning point for me as all I wanted to do was sing like Ellie Rowsell.’ Wolf Alice’s ‘Blue Weekend’ record also happens to be her favourite that she owns on vinyl, which is personally signed by the band themselves.
Fashion is another interest Evie has had for a long time, ‘Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved dressing up in mad outfits and creating looks that really represent how I’m feeling at that moment.’ She often uses fashion as a tool to improve her mood or feel more comfortable in certain situations.
Evie runs Jules & Eve, an online jewellery brand, with her mum, Jules. It started after Jules learnt how to make wirework jewellery and began to make pieces to sell at craft fayres. The pair have incorporated their love for crystals into their designs, with crystal combinations and star signs influencing their creations.
‘In the last year or so I have become increasingly interested in spirituality, it has been such a turning point in my life and it has led to my passion in crystals and astrology’. Evie explains she finds crystals comforting and that they’ve helped control anxiety and open her mind to new experiences. Her current favourites are Caribbean Calcite, Amethyst, Moldavite and Larimar. ‘These are helping me stay calm and peaceful, but at the same time, allowing me to develop and get closer to my goals.’
Having turned a passion into a business with her mum, Evie’s one piece of advice for others wanting to do the same is to have patience. ‘Patience in learning how to make the products you sell, patience in branding and advertising, and patience in waiting for the sales to come through. As long as your heart is in it, you will go far’.
