LA-based indie-pop artist, Bailey Baum explores coming of age themes in her songwriting while sharing the intimacies surrounding love, heartbreaks, friendships and everything in-between. Cultivating over 7 million+ streams on Spotify, Bailey is on track to release her debut EP “Over It” on July 30 via Next Wave Records / Ultra Records.
“Over It” reveals the inner process of healing and the journey to self-love and self-care after experiencing heartbreak. The dreamy, bedroom-pop EP centers around soulful melodies and ethereal soundscapes that take after the stylings of BANKS, Lana Del Rey and Kasey Musgraves.
The five-track EP is packed with stories of young love and reflective lyrics to navigate the artist’s own heartbreak. Through a healing journey, Baum wants listeners to feel a sense of empowerment while acknowledging that all emotions you have are valid and to let yourself feel everything freely.
Baum breaks down the power in vulnerability and the lessons learned through the discovery of self-love in “Over It.”
[Serenity:] I just want to start off with you giving me a brief statement about your inspiration behind your debut EP “Over It.”
[Bailey:] “Over It” is honestly just about getting over someone, kind of describes itself. I was never in a relationship but I've been in situations that felt like relationships, and had this experience with this one guy, and it was just the same cycle all the time, having the same back and forth things where you fall right back into them and you're doing the same things and then you're kind of like “wait, this isn't going anywhere, so what am I doing here.” I came to that realization and decided I don't want to be doing this anymore and I'm over it. And that's kind of how the whole EP fell together and Iwent through this weird sense of heartbreak, even though it was never a relationship but still felt very real to me. That's kind of where it all stemmed from; this cycle of the same thing and then choosing to choose yourself now and making the decision of moving on and not being in this same cycle on repeat 24/7 so that's how “Over It'' kind of came into existence.
[Serenity:] If you can describe “Over It” in just three words, what would they be?
[Bailey:] I think vulnerability, heartbreak and moving on.
[Serenity:] Would you say your vulnerability sort of plays into your music now? [Bailey:] I feel like being vulnerable is really hard and I'm just learning that, that's where people can connect and relate the most instead of being surface level with things, and I think it's really scary but being vulnerable is a huge part of music in general.
[Serenity:] While creating this EP, did you have a particular song that you struggled with either lyrically or musically?
[Bailey:] I think the one that was the hardest to put together is called “Not Missing You.” It's the most vulnerable and the most real one for me. And I also think it's just a little bit different than the rest of the EP. I think musically, it just took a little bit longer to put together but also in a weird way it fell together really quick because it was just so vulnerable and real.
[Serenity:] What message do you want your listeners to take away from “Over It.”
[Bailey:] It's okay to feel, and feel things and to like to have days where you’re not okay and it's okay to like to sit and process things and be vulnerable with yourself and others. There's always room to grow and learn and I just feel like being able to just choose yourself in the process of things is really important and just promote self love. Like all of that really mixed together.
[Serenity:] I've always wondered this since you're both a singer and songwriter. Is it hard to write about people who might hear your song one day?
[Bailey:] Yeah I think that's the scariest part about putting out this whole project is that this person's probably gonna know that it's about them, and that's really honestly the hardest part of songwriting, it would be easy if I was writing songs about someone that didn't exist.
[Serenity:] Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
[Bailey:] Off the top of my head I love Kacey Musgraves. I love Lana Del Rey. But I also grew up heavily inspired and listening to the Beatles. And I also really loved Christina Perry. And I grew up really always listening to her, but I would say my biggest inspirations are Lana and Kacey Musgraves.
[Serenity:] Do you have a dream collaboration?
[Bailey:] I have so many dream collaborations, I would love to work with a guy in the future, I'm not really sure who yet but I think that would be really cool. I think it'd be awesome to one day be able to just to learn from and work with or be around Lana, that would be like my absolute dream, just to like sit in the studio with her. I think for like an actual collab I would love to work with a guy and just haven't really pinpoint who yet.
[Serenity:] If you could go back and give your younger self some advice about the music industry, what would it be?
[Bailey:] That's a hard question. That's a good question now. I think just learning to not compare yourself to others, and what they're doing in the industry and just knowing that your path is your path and nothing can change that for you. I feel like it's really easy to just compare to others and the musical journeys and what they're doing. So you just have to stay strong in what you're doing and believing in yourself.
[Serenity:] Finally, what's in store for you for the rest of the year? [Bailey:] Well with this EP, I'm dropping my first round of merch which I'm really excited about. I love fashion. I think fashion and music go hand in hand together. And so I think that's obviously a next step, and I have a couple little other surprises along the way that I can't necessarily talk about, but I'm also really excited to just continue writing and working on the next project.
[Serenity:] Is there anything I didn't ask that you wanted to add?
[Bailey:] I'm reiterating that just like this is the most vulnerable I've ever been and I just hope that people are able to relate and connect to everything, and I'm just excited to continue growing and building and learning and just doing more. So I'm excited for the future.
